Erasmus House & the Beguinage of Anderlecht

Discover the house where the famous scholar Erasmus stayed in 1521. Today, it houses a collection of paintings by Old Masters such as Hieronymus Bosch and Hans Holbein, a rich collection of old prints, a Medicine Garden and a Philosophy Garden. Near the Erasmus House you can also visit the recently restored beguinage, an exceptionally well-preserved oasis of peace in the historic heart of Anderlecht.

BEHIND THE SCENE Did you know? The Erasmus House’s rare books collection includes a large number of censored books. Pages torn out, text blackened, names erased… most of these mutilations date back to the end of the 16th century and the 17th century, in other words after Erasmus’ death. Erasmus’ controversial ideas became suspect, and even inappropriate, in the context of the religious conflict that divided Europe. But was Erasmus himself a defender of freedom of speech?
